It is the most-requested holiday in East Africa: a serious safari, then a serious beach. The wildlife days fill you up with adrenalin, dust and golden light; Zanzibar resets the body with white sand, turquoise water and an Indian-Ocean breeze. Done well, the two halves complement each other perfectly. Done badly, you spend the trip transferring between airports. Here is how to plan it right.

Why the Combination Works

A safari is intense. You wake at 5am, you spend hours in a vehicle, you absorb a huge volume of new impressions, and emotionally it is closer to a pilgrimage than to a holiday. After 5–7 nights of that, the body wants stillness. Zanzibar provides it: nothing scheduled, no early starts, the day shaped by the tide rather than by the bush. The order matters — safari first, beach second. Reverse it and the safari intensity feels like an interruption, not a climax.

The Bush: 4–6 Nights at Porini Camp

Most travellers under-estimate how many nights they need on safari and over-estimate how many they need on the beach. We recommend a minimum of 4 nights at Porini Camp — 5 or 6 is better. Anything shorter and you spend the trip moving rather than experiencing. Porini is in the southern circuit (Nyerere National Park), away from the crowds of the Serengeti, and offers private-use only — your guide, your vehicle, your schedule.

The Beach: 4–7 Nights on Zanzibar

Zanzibar is not one beach — it is many. Stone Town for history and culture (1–2 nights). Matemwe and Pwani Mchangani on the northeast coast for white-sand reef beaches and excellent snorkelling. Paje and Jambiani on the southeast for shallow lagoons, kitesurfing and a younger crowd. Kendwa and Nungwi on the north for swimmable beaches at low tide. Pemba Island, north of the main island, for serious diving. Most travellers split between Stone Town (1 night) and one beach destination (4–6 nights).

The Logistics: Flight Connections

The transfer is straightforward. From Beho Beho or Kiba airstrip in Nyerere, scheduled flights run direct to Zanzibar in roughly 90 minutes — no need to backtrack via Dar es Salaam. • Day 1 – Arrive Dar es Salaam, overnight in city hotel

• Day 2 – Morning flight to Beho Beho, transfer to Porini Camp (game drive en route)

• Days 3–6 – 4 full safari days at Porini (game drives, walking, boating)

• Day 7 – Morning flight Beho Beho → Zanzibar, beach lodge check-in

• Days 8–9 – Beach time, optional Stone Town day or snorkelling

• Day 10 – Departure flight from Zanzibar

Best Time to Combine

June through October: peak dry safari season, dry Zanzibar weather — the safest combo months. November and December: short rains in Nyerere bring great photography light and Zanzibar stays warm. January and February: green-season safari plus the warmest Zanzibar water of the year (28 °C). March–May is the long rains — we close, and Zanzibar's main season ends.

What It Costs

A 10-day combo with Porini Camp (private-use, full board, all activities) plus mid-range Zanzibar beach lodge starts at roughly 5,500–7,000 USD per person, depending on season and group size.
