Fishing Safari in Nyerere National Park

"Few rivers in Africa still hold the mystique of the Rufiji. Cutting through the heart of Nyerere National Park, it carves channels, feeds a chain of palm-fringed lakes, and now spills into a vast new reservoir behind Stiegler's Gorge. For the angler, it offers something almost extinct on this continent: enormous, lightly-fished waters set in true wild Africa.

At Wanyamapori, a fishing safari is not a sport tour bolted onto a game drive. It is a slow, considered way of meeting the river on its own terms — rod in hand, hippos snorting downstream, fish eagles wheeling overhead."

Fishing on the Rufiji river

The Rufiji is the longest river in Tanzania and the beating heart of the park. From Porini Camp we can reach the top fishing grounds of the rufiji river in 45 minutes. This proximity maximizes fishing time.

Best fishing grounds are the winding side arms, where deep pools, sandbanks, and submerged logs create classic tigerfish water.

Lure fishing and fly fishing both produce. Casting copper spoons, jointed plugs, or large streamer flies past structure brings vicious takes from tigerfish; bottom rigs with cut bait drop down to the vundu catfish that hold in the river's deeper bends. Mornings and late afternoons are prime — the surface comes alive, kingfishers work the shallows, and the strikes are explosive.

This is not a fishery measured in numbers. It is measured in setting: you may spend a full morning on a stretch of water where you dont see other persons than your own guide!

The Lakes of Nyerere — Tagalala, Manze, Siwandu & Nzerakera

Strung through the southern half of the park is a chain of shallow lakes fed by the Rufiji's floods. Each fishes differently, and our guides read the water, the wind, and the season before deciding where to launch.

Lake Tagalala, ringed by ancient borassus palms and famous for its hot springs, holds the largest hippo concentrations in the system and strong populations of tilapia and catfish.

Lake Manze and Lake Nzerakera are smaller, palm-fringed, and  ideal for fly anglers working the margins.

Lake Siwandu, deeper and more open, is the most productive of the lake group for tigerfish, particularly as water levels fall into the dry months and bait fish concentrate.

The New Frontier — Fishing the Julius Nyerere Dam Reservoir

In 2022, the Rufiji was dammed at Stiegler's Gorge to create the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Reservoir — an immense new body of water flooding hundreds of square kilometres of former miombo woodland. Submerged trees, drowned valleys, and a fish population still finding its equilibrium have produced what biologists already describe as one of East Africa's most intriguing new fisheries.

For anglers, this is uncharted territory. The standing timber holds tigerfish in numbers, the catfish biomass is significant, and a cast here genuinely lands in water that has rarely, if ever, seen a lure. Where access is permitted and conditions allow, Wanyamapori can arrange exploratory days on the reservoir — frontier fishing in the truest sense of the word.

Target Species

Tigerfish (Hydrocynus vittatus) — The marquee species. Silver flanks, black lateral lines, and a mouth of interlocking teeth. They strike hard, run hot, and throw hooks more often than they don't. Fish in the 2–6 kg range are routine; larger specimens are taken every season.

Vundu catfish (Heterobranchus longifilis) — Africa's freshwater heavyweight. Vundu over 30 kg live in the deeper pools of the Rufiji and the reservoir, and they fight with the dogged, dirty power of true big-river fish.

Sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus) — Widespread and aggressive on bait, a reliable bend in the rod when the tigers refuse.

Tilapia species — Abundant in the lakes, taken on light tackle or fly, and a welcome guest on the camp table where retention is permitted.

Best Season for Fishing in Nyerere

Fishing in Nyerere is rewarding all year round. What changes from month to month is not whether the fish bite, but which species are most active and which water — the river, the lakes, or the dam reservoir — is most productive. A well-planned fishing safari simply follows the season to where the fish are.

Tackle, Rods and Reels

Porini Camp is well-equipped for serious fishing. Our rods, reels and rigs come from two brands we have come to trust on the Rufiji:

DAIWA — for tigerfish, lure work, and general spinning across the lakes and river channels.

MadCat — purpose-built heavy tackle for vundu and the big catfish that hold in the deep pools.

That said, guests are very welcome to bring their own gear, and many do — particularly fly anglers, for whom rod, reel and fly selection are half the pleasure. A 7- to 9-weight setup with floating and intermediate lines, paired with a box of large streamers in red/black, chartreuse and silver, will cover most situations on the Rufiji and the lakes.

A practical note on luggage. Access to Porini Camp is by light aircraft on Coastal Aviation or Auric Air, both of which apply strict weight limits — generally 15 kg per person in soft-sided bags, including hand luggage. Rod tubes are permitted but count toward the allowance. If you plan to bring your own gear, please let us know in advance so we can advise on packing and, where possible, arrange weight balancing across the flight.
