Tanzania Safari Cost: Honest Pricing for a Private Safari in 2026

A lion at Nyerere National Park – the safari you are paying for

"How much does a Tanzania safari cost?" is the most common question we get — and the answer most websites give is unhelpful. Either a vague "from $200/day" anchor that nobody can actually book at, or a luxury price tag that scares people off without explaining what they're paying for. This guide is the honest version: every line item, what drives the differences, and what a real private-use safari at Porini Camp actually costs in 2026.

Total Trip Cost: Realistic Ranges

  • Budget shared safari (camping, group vehicle): 200–350 USD per person per day

  • Mid-range shared lodge safari: 400–650 USD per person per day

  • Premium / private-use camps (Porini territory): 500–950 USD per person per day

  • Ultra-luxury private camps and conservancies: 1,200–2,500+ USD per person per day

These are full-board rates including game drives. Excluded: international flights, domestic flights, park fees, premium drinks, optional activities.

What Drives the Price

1. Accommodation Type

Big-volume lodges drive prices down through scale. Small private-use camps cost more per person because the camp's full operating cost (staff, food, vehicle, generator, water, supplies) is split across just 6 guests rather than 30. You are not paying for marble bathrooms — you are paying for the absence of other guests.

2. Vehicle Sharing

Shared safari vehicles split the guide and Land Cruiser cost across 6–9 passengers. Private vehicles — your group only — cost the same to operate but are paid for by your group alone. At full Porini occupancy (6 guests), private-vehicle math becomes very competitive with shared-vehicle alternatives.

3. Park Fees

TANAPA park fees in Nyerere National Park are roughly 90–100 USD per adult per day, plus 30 USD per vehicle per day. These are non-negotiable, government-set, and apply equally to budget and luxury operators. Children's rates are reduced. Most premium operators include these in your daily rate — always check.

4. Domestic Flights

Dar es Salaam → Beho Beho airstrip (Nyerere): 250–350 USD per person, one way. Beho Beho → Zanzibar: 200–300 USD per person. These are operated by Coastal Aviation, Auric Air and a few other small carriers. Always book in advance — last-minute capacity is limited.

What Porini Camp Actually Costs

Porini Camp starts at 470 USD per person per night in shoulder season (June, mid-October to mid-December) and 580–650 USD per person per night in peak (July–September), based on full occupancy of 6 guests. Smaller groups pay slightly more per head. The rate includes:

  • Full-board accommodation (private-use camp)

  • Game drives by day and night (where permitted)

  • Walking safaris with armed TANAPA ranger

  • Soft drinks, beer, house wine

  • Daily laundry, drinking water, in-camp Wi-Fi

Charged separately: TANAPA park fees, premium spirits and wines, boat-safari fuel surcharges on the reservoir, optional fishing trips, helicopter charters.

Sample Total: 5-Night Safari for a Couple

  • 5 nights at Porini Camp (couple, shoulder season): ~6,800 USD

  • TANAPA park fees: ~1,000 USD

  • Domestic flights (Dar ↔ Nyerere, return): ~1,200 USD

  • Total ground cost: ~9,000 USD for the couple, all-in

Compared to a luxury Serengeti shared-camp itinerary at similar quality (~7,500–9,500 USD), Porini's private-use model is genuinely competitive once you factor in the experience differential.

Where People Hide Costs (Be Wary)

  • "From $X per night" – always read what's included; many advertised low rates exclude park fees, drinks, transfers

  • Surprise transfer fees – some operators charge separately for airstrip transfers (we don't)

  • "Conservation fees" or "community contribution" levies that aren't actually park fees

  • Over-priced domestic flights when booked through agents – always compare with direct booking
