Porini Camp is our expedition-style camp located in the heart of Nyerere National Park. Nestled along the sandy banks of the Beho Beho River, it is ideally positioned for an authentic and immersive wilderness experience.

Far from the well-trodden routes of Northern Tanzania, Nyerere National Park offers a safari experience that is raw, exclusive, and truly authentic. While the north is famous for its iconic landscapes and high visitor numbers, Nyerere remains a hidden gem—vast, untamed, and refreshingly uncrowded.

Here, the safari unfolds across a diverse and dramatic landscape unlike anywhere else in Tanzania. Endless miombo woodlands, open savannas, and palm-lined plains are interwoven with a network of lakes, lagoons, and channels fed by the mighty Rufiji River—the lifeline of the park.

The Rufiji River system creates one of Africa’s most unique safari environments. It attracts an abundance of wildlife, from large elephant herds and buffalo to hippos and crocodiles that thrive along its banks. The surrounding lakes and waterways make Nyerere one of the few places in Africa where you can combine classic game drives with boat safaris, offering a completely different perspective on the wilderness.

Compared to the north, where wildlife viewing often takes place in busier areas, Nyerere provides a sense of true solitude. Here, animals behave naturally, undisturbed by crowds, allowing for intimate and authentic encounters.

For travelers seeking more than just a safari—for those who value space, silence, and connection to nature—Nyerere National Park is the ultimate destination.

Visit Nyerere National Park between June and mid March

The rythm of nature - Experience the Seasons of the African Wilderness

June-September

High: 27.5°C / 81.5°F

Low: 18°C / 64°F

Rainfall:7.25MM / 0.3IN

The camp reopens in June following the long rains, when the landscape is at its most vibrant—lush, green, and teeming with life. Water levels are high, creating ideal conditions for boating safaris and exceptional wildlife viewing.

As the dry season unfolds over the following months, the vegetation gradually thins and water sources recede, drawing wildlife closer to rivers and lakes. This natural rhythm makes animal movements increasingly predictable, enhancing the quality of game drives and walking safaris.

Late June is a particularly rewarding time to visit, offering outstanding safari experiences while still avoiding peak season rates, which begin in July.

During the high season months, guests can expect clear skies, warm sunny days, and prime wildlife encounters—perfect conditions for an unforgettable African safari

Low:20°C / 68.5°F

Rainfall:172.25MM / 6.8IN

From January through mid-March, the landscape transforms into a striking sunburned golden savannah, where endless plains shimmer under the African sun. The days are warm and bright, occasionally softened by short afternoon showers that bring dramatic skies and breathtaking light conditions.

Wildlife remains abundant, moving between remaining water sources, while the golden tones of the bush create a spectacular backdrop for photography. This season offers a unique blend of raw beauty, intense light, and tranquil atmosphere, perfect for those seeking a more intimate and visually captivating safari experience.

October - December

High:31°C / 88°F

Low:22°C / 72°F

Rainfall:116.5MM / 4.6IN

October is one of the finest times for land-based game viewing.
With vegetation at its thinnest and water sources limited, wildlife gathers in higher concentrations, offering exceptional and easily predictable sightings.

Towards the end of the month, the first clouds begin to gather, signaling the arrival of the short rains, which typically begin in early November and continue through mid-December. During this period, both the landscape and wildlife are revitalized. Despite the return of greenery, game viewing remains excellent, while boating safaris resume as water levels rise across the lakes and river systems.

This season is also a highlight for bird enthusiasts, as migratory species from Europe and Asia arrive, adding to the already rich resident birdlife.
