Why we only use Toyota Land Cruisers

Our Safari Vehicle: Open Toyota Land Cruiser 79 with the Legendary 1HZ Diesel

When we set out to choose the perfect safari vehicle, we had three non-negotiables: go anywhere, run forever, and keep guests comfortable even on corrugated tracks. That’s why we built our open game-viewer around the Toyota Land Cruiser 79 and Toyota’s 1HZ naturally aspirated diesel engine. The result is real off-road ability, proven durability, and a smooth, comfortable ride—for up to 6 passengers—plus thoughtful extras like a powered fridge for cool drinks at any time and integrated padded camera rests for photographers.

Why the Land Cruiser 79?

The 79 Series is the workhorse of the African bush for good reasons. It’s built on a heavy-duty ladder frame with live axles and a part-time 4×4 system—a simple, strong layout that handles punishing tracks, deep sand, and rocky riverbeds. Fewer electronics and robust mechanicals translate to reliability far from workshops.

The 1HZ Diesel: Built to Last

Under the bonnet sits Toyota’s famed 1HZ: a 4.2-litre, inline-six, naturally aspirated diesel known for longevity and calm, low-rpm torque. It’s a steady, tractable engine that pulls smoothly up steep two-tracks, idles quietly at sightings, and sips fuel sensibly—exactly what you want on long days in remote country.

Real Off-Road Capability (Not Just Marketing)

  • Low-range transfer case for precise control on rock steps, washouts, and steep descents.

  • Excellent ground clearance & approach/departure angles to step over erosion humps and termite mounds without dragging.

  • Strong chassis & recovery points for safe extractions if black-cotton mud or deep sand demand it.

  • Predictable handling on corrugations—long wheelbase and tuned suspension keep the vehicle composed.

Durability You Can Feel

Safari vehicles live hard lives: heat, dust, mud, and constant stop-go. The 79 is designed for it.

  • Heavy-duty driveline for constant low-speed work.

  • Cooling & filtration sized for hot, dusty climates.

  • Serviceable design so preventative maintenance is fast between drives.

Fewer squeaks, fewer rattles, more season-after-season confidence.

Comfort in the Bush: Smooth Suspension, Great Seating—Plus Cold Drinks

  • Suspension tuned for smoothness so corrugations become a calm, floating ride rather than a constant jiggle.

  • Comfortable seating for six: three spacious rows (two guests per row) so everyone has a “window” seat and a clear view.

  • Open sides & elevated view for 360° wildlife watching and fresh airflow.

  • Powered fridge on board so we can serve cool drinks at any time—perfect in the heat of the day or after a dusty track.

  • 12V/USB charging available* so cameras and phones are topped up.*Tell us if you’ll need charging and we’ll reserve the right car.

Purpose-Built for Photography: Padded Camera Rests

We designed the open body with photographers in mind:

  • Padded camera rests integrated along the rails for steady, cushioned support (perfect for beanbags and long lenses).

  • Rests available on both sides in every row, so each guest can brace comfortably.

  • Smooth throttle and gentle stops—the 1HZ’s low-rpm torque lets us hold position quietly at sightings.

  • Unobstructed sightlines thanks to open sides and tiered seating.

BFGoodrich HD-Terrain Tyres: Grippy, Tough, Bush-Proof

BF Goodrich HD-Terrain tyres

Tyres are where capability meets the ground. We run BFGoodrich HD-Terrain because they deliver:

  • Reinforced sidewalls that shrug off thorns and sharp stones.

  • Cut-/chip-resistant compound for gravel and hot laterite.

  • Confident traction across sand, wet clay, and rock shelves.

Fewer punctures, more time with wildlife.

Why Off-Road Capability Matters in Selous/Nyerere

Even when we stay on designated game-viewing tracks (as park rules require), true off-road capability is essential here. The Selous–Nyerere system is famously wild and lightly developed compared to more traveled parks:

  • Seasonal black-cotton soils: After rain they turn to glue; when they dry they crack into deep ruts. Low range, careful throttle, and tough tyres keep progress steady without wheelspin.

  • Corrugated laterite: Long stretches of washboard can shake lesser vehicles apart. Our tuned suspension keeps the ride stable and protects cameras.

  • Deep river sand & floodplain crossings: Near channels and oxbows, tracks can become soft and cambered. The Cruiser’s torque, gearing, and footprint keep momentum without drama.

  • Erosion gullies & washouts: Stormwater cuts tracks overnight. Ground clearance, good approach/departure angles, and proper recovery points matter.

  • Overgrown two-tracks: Thorn, hidden stumps, and narrow bush tunnels are common; robust bodywork and tyre sidewalls reduce snags and sidewall cuts.

  • Long distances & limited maintenance: Roads are graded less frequently than in busier parks; self-reliance and vehicle toughness are part of safe operations.

Still Wild—How It Compares to the Serengeti

The Serengeti has an extensive, well-maintained road network and far more traffic; sightings often attract multiple vehicles. Selous/Nyerere remains quieter and wilder: fewer graded roads, far lower vehicle density, and more time alone at sightings. That solitude is a gift—but it also means you need a vehicle that can look after itself when the track turns rough or the weather shifts. The Land Cruiser 79 was built for exactly that kind of country.

Conservation note: We always respect park regulations—staying on designated tracks and avoiding sensitive areas. Off-road capability isn’t about leaving the road; it’s about traversing tough roads safely and minimizing impact.

Safety & Practicalities

  • Pro guides trained for wildlife-aware, defensive driving on two-way tracks.

  • Clear briefings before each drive on safe movement in an open vehicle.

  • Seatbelts at every seat and low-speed etiquette near animals to keep stress low for everyone.
